![]() May 21, 2015: Tribune Publishing Company has completed the purchase of MLIM, LLC, the owner of The San Diego Union-Tribune (UT San Diego) and nine community weekly newspapers in San Diego County, California. Patrick Soon-Shiong along with the Los Angeles Times and the smaller papers of the California News Group. In June 2018, the Union Tribune was sold to biotech billionaire Dr. ![]() In January 2012, the paper changed its name to "U-T San Diego," but it was changed back to the San Diego Union-Tribune after the Tribune Publishing Company bought the newspaper group in May 2015. In October 2012, the U-T purchased the North County Times and it merged into the U-T in an edition specific to North County news and information called U-T North County Times. In December 2011, Platinum sold the newspaper to MLIM, LLC, a company owned by local hotel developer Doug Manchester. In 2009, the Copley family of La Jolla sold the newspaper to Platinum Equity, a private equity firm. The newspaper came about from the 1992 merger of The San Diego Union (founded in 1868) and the Evening Tribune (founded in 1895). The San Diego Union-Tribune is the leading daily newspaper in San Diego, California.
